Our Grove at Horseshoe Lake Park currently consists of 41 trees, including cherry, crabapple, magnolia, serviceberries, buckeyes and others. The grove is anchored by a commemorative garden and stone, recognizing the initial cherry tree planting by the Village Garden Club in 1930. Of special note is the Bird Cherry tree which is believed to be one of the few in Ohio. In 2018, the club was the recipient of the City’s Heritage Tree Award for this tree. While the grove was initially planted with cherry trees, other flowering trees have been added in subsequent years. More recently, native flowering trees adapted to the environment of northeast Ohio have been added to the grove.
The Village Garden Club organizes work days at the grove throughout the growing season. Club and community members, including local scouts, gather to tend to the trees. We welcome volunteers, and will be happy to contact you when our work days are scheduled.
If you are a fellow tree lover, like working in the soil, and have some time to devote to nature, you are encouraged to take part in our "adopt-a-tree" program. Adoptive 'parents' assist with maintenance of the grove. Garden Club as well as community members are welcome to adopt a tree.
Adopting a tree includes:
Cleaning the bed under the tree. This includes pulling out weeds, deadheading flowers, including daffodils (if in the bed), and cutting down the dead leaves of daffodils and other flowers.
Cutting suckers which may grow from the roots of the tree as they sap the tree's energy.
General tidiness including removing debris in the bed.
Reporting any damage to the tree or dead limbs to the Village Garden Club
Edging & mulching on VGC organized workdays
Adopting a tree does not include:
Planting trees
Deer protection
Using chemicals or pesticides
Fertilizing
